The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) is one of the big three television networks and is part of the Disney-ABC Television Group. ABC is comprised of 10 owned-and-operated stations and nearly 200 affiliates across the United States.
The CBS television network has 204 stations in the U.S. and U.S. possessions, as well as on cable television across Canada and Bermuda via local affiliates.
A joint venture between CBS and Warner Bros., The CW Television Network bills itself as the only network to target 18- to 34-year-old women. The CW airs on a network of more than 200 stations across the United States.
FOX Television currently owns and operates 17 stations, in addition to working with more than 185 affiliates across the United States. A 2003 survey found FOX reached more than 96 percent of U.S. television households.
The NBC television network transmits more than 200 affiliated stations across the United States, as well as 10 stations it owns and operates. NBC’s Telemundo network reaches 93 percent of Hispanic viewers through a network of 61 broadcast stations or affiliates and nearly 800 cable systems.
The Univision Network bills itself as “one of the top five broadcast networks in America regardless of language.” Univision is also the No. 1 Spanish-language broadcast television network, covering 95 percent of Hispanic television households through 26 of its own stations and more than 40 affiliates.
Part of Belfast-based UTV Media, UTV Internet provides dial-up and broadband options for residential and business customers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. UTV also provides Web design, Web hosting, and domain registration services.
Mobile
Sprint-Nextel serves more than 48.8 million customers and was the first U.S.-based national carrier to launch a wireless 4G service. Newsweek ranked Sprint No. 6 in its 2010 Green Rankings, listing it as one of the nation’s greenest companies, the highest of any telecommunications company.
With more than 101 million customers nation-wide, Verizon claims to operate the largest and most reliable voice and 3G data network.
Hardware
As of 2002, Compaq became a wholly owned subsidiary of HP. HP retained the Compaq brand for use on some consumer-oriented products, such as the Compaq Presario PC. All Compaq computers now ship with HP software.
Hewlett-Packard is one of the world’s largest information services companies in the world, with a range of hardware products for consumers and businesses of all sizes. In the past few years, HP has expanded its focus through several acquisitions, such as Compaq and Palm.
Kepware develops communication drivers to automation controllers, input/output (I/O) and field devices. Kepware has developed more than 130 communication protocols and currently ships more than 100,000 units each year.
Online Media
Ask Networks include Ask Sponsored Listings, Ask.com, Ask.com Mobile, Ask Kids, Dictionary.com and Bloglines. The Ask.com community contains nearly 400 million pairs of questions and answers, with more added each week by Ask.com and community members around the world.
MapQuest was one of the pioneers of on-line mapping services. MapQuest is now owned by AOL and offers a variety of mapping and location-based services for use on the desktop, via mobile devices and as custom applications.
Professional Affiliations
The American Geophysical Union (AGU), which was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and for more than 50 years operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences, is now a nonprofit corporation chartered under the laws of the District of Columbia. The Union is dedicated to the furtherance of the geophysical sciences through the individual efforts of its members and in cooperation with other national and international scientific organizations.
The American Meteorological Society promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, AMS has a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, students, and weather enthusiasts. The Alliance for Earth Observations™ is a publicly and privately funded initiative of the
Institute for Global Environmental Strategies
to promote the understanding and use of land, air and sea observations for societal and economic benefit.
Research and Development
AER provides research, development and analysis in areas such as atmospheric and environmental science, defense, meteorology, oceanography and remote sensing. AER scientists are recognized as experts in their respective fields, with more than 85 having Ph.D.s or advanced degrees.
