Dr. Charlie Liu

Chief Architect

Dr. Charlie Liu is chief architect at Earth Networks, where he designed and coded the WeatherBug desktop application, which has been downloaded by more than 100 million users, and the server systems that collect, analyze and serve live weather information from more than 8,000 weather tracking stations. He was also instrumental in the development of the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network™ (ENTLN), which collects, processes and serves in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning data in real time. Dr. Liu also played a major role in developing the GIS infrastructure upon which the company’s decision-support systems operate. Additionally, he has led the development of numerous flagship software-based and web-enabled decision support applications.

Dr. Liu joined the company in 1999. Prior to Earth Networks, Liu was senior software engineer at Bridgeport Machines, where he led the development of an advanced CAD/CAM system. Prior to that, he was a software engineer at Hewlett-Packard, where he worked on a graphics modeling system.

Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he studied computer aided design and manufacturing. He received his bachelor’s and his master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. His research interests include software architecture, 3D modeling, signal processing and real-time data systems.
