3 Easy Giving Tuesday Ideas for Promoting Your Nonprofit

Giving Tuesday is a global day of charitable giving that falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Last year, over 700,000 people took part in Giving Tuesday and raised approximately $116 million! As this important date quickly approaches, it’s time to ask yourself: Is your nonprofit ready for #GivingTuesday? If not, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with three easy Giving Tuesday ideas to get you started.

1. Become an official #GivingTuesday Partner


If you’re part of a registered non-profit [a 501(c)3 in the U.S.] you can easily join the #GivingTuesday event! Once you brainstorm a specific #GivingTuesday initiative, you can join the movement to become an official member of #GivingTuesday. The team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact and the 92nd Street Y created #GivingTuesday as a way to connected diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world to encourage giving. By officially joining, your nonprofit helps to strengthen the charitable movement as it enters its fifth annual celebration.

2. Get Creative!


One of the most enjoyable aspects of this season of giving is coming up with creative Giving Tuesday ideas and campaigns to drive supporter engagement! We’re anticipating most nonprofits to really step up their game this charitable season. Last year there were some especially imaginative campaigns, including campaigns that asked for resources other than dollar amounts. One of the best campaigns from last year was an online donor platform’s call to register organ donors with: “Give with your Heart.” Other creative ideas include something like the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” or pledging to match donations.

3. Get the Word Out in Your Community!


The best way to raise money for your nonprofit through Giving Tuesday is to make sure you get the word out! This means spreading the word to both your current donors and other potential philanthropists. The #GivingTuesday Organization has put together a page of really great toolkits and tips for helping you reach your target audience through social media, PR, and emails! One creative campaign to get the word out is to post #UNselfies.
