GERMANTOWN, MD-September 27, 2016-Earth Networks® today announced that it has been selected as the ‘Official Weather Information Provider’ by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). As a result, Earth Networks’ popular WeatherBug app will be exclusively promoted across more than 1,500 high schools and middle schools to ensure student and public safety.

By leveraging weather data from more than 8,000 weather sensors and stations, NYSPHSAA gains access to real-time temperature, lightning and severe weather data to make informed safety decisions for student practices, games, tournaments and other school events. A key reason Earth Networks was selected over competitors is the 27 weather parameters measured by WeatherBug Weather Stations – including accurate heat index and wind chill metrics that are both critical to NYSPHSAA safety procedures.

“When it comes to the safety of our students, parents and school faculty, advanced warning helps saves lives,” said Robert Zayas, Executive Director, NYSPHSAA. “Not only does the WeatherBug mobile app deliver severe weather alerts on average 9 minutes faster than other solutions thanks to its unique, in-cloud lightning detection, but it provides all of the key weather metrics we need to meet and exceed stringent state safety protocols.”

In addition to the consumer features available on the WeatherBug app, NYSPHSAA schools can also add a ‘Community Card’ to the app to keep parents and students informed about school happenings, including when school is closed unexpectedly due to inclement weather. Because users check their WeatherBug on average 21 days a month, making it practically a daily use app, the community card becomes a valuable communications tool for schools.

“We are thrilled to partner with one of the nation’s largest athletic associations to deliver the highest levels of safety to the communities these schools serve,” said Mark Hyer, Director – Education, Earth Networks. “Our network of weather sensors and the most advanced severe weather detection and alerting capabilities on the market enable state athletic associations to easily unify their safety procedures – while providing students, school faculty and parents with a single app for accurate, real-time weather updates.”
